10th Annual Tri-City Litter Cleanup

8:00 AM - Noon

Before Cleanup Day

If you are selected and confirmed as a Cleanup Captain, you will need to schedule a time with Volunteer Garland to pick up your Captain Kit and cleanup supplies prior to the event.

Your kit will include the supplies and information you will need for your assigned cleanup site. Please review your materials before cleanup day and bring your Captain Kit and supplies with you to your site on the morning of the event.

7:45 AM | Captains Arrive at Assigned Cleanup Sites

Captains should arrive at their assigned cleanup site by 7:45 AM to prepare for volunteers.

• Have your Captain Kit and cleanup supplies ready.
• Review the cleanup area and site boundaries.
• Set up supplies for distribution.
• Be ready to greet and organize volunteers as they arrive.

8:00 AM | Volunteers Arrive at Assigned Cleanup Sites

Volunteers will report directly to the cleanup site they registered for.

Captains should:

• Welcome volunteers and help with check-in.
• Make sure volunteers are at the correct site.
• Distribute gloves, litter grabbers, trash bags, and other supplies.
• Review safety information and cleanup boundaries.
• Help organize volunteers before cleanup begins.

8:30 AM | Cleanup Begins

Captains should:

• Lead volunteers into the designated cleanup area.
• Keep the group organized and within the assigned boundaries.
• Encourage safe cleanup practices.
• Keep track of supplies.
• Be available to answer questions and assist volunteers.
• Contact Volunteer Garland staff with any safety concerns or issues.

8:30 - 11:00 AM | Litter Cleanup

Throughout the cleanup, remind volunteers to:

• Wear gloves when handling litter.
• Use litter grabbers whenever possible.
• Stay aware of traffic, water, uneven ground, and other surroundings.
• Never handle hazardous, sharp, or questionable items.
• Stay within the designated cleanup area.
• Take breaks and stay hydrated as needed.

11:00 AM | Cleanup Ends

At 11:00 AM, Captains should let all volunteers know that cleanup is ending.

• Ask volunteers to finish what they are working on and stop cleanup activities.
• Remind volunteers who were dropped off to call or text their ride for pickup.
• Collect all reusable cleanup supplies.
• Make sure all supplies are accounted for.
• Make sure filled trash bags and collected litter are left in the designated collection area.
• Check the cleanup site before leaving.
• Thank your volunteers for their hard work.
• Follow the instructions provided by Volunteer Garland for returning your Captain Kit and cleanup supplies.

Important Captain Information

• Captains must be 18 years of age or older.
• Volunteers under 18 may serve as a Co-Captain with a parent, guardian, or school mentor.
• Captain sites are assigned on a first come, first served basis.
• Registering to be a Captain does not guarantee a Captain position or cleanup site.
• You are officially confirmed as a Captain only after receiving a personal confirmation email from a Volunteer Garland employee.
• If you do not receive a personal confirmation email, the available Captain positions and sites have been filled.
