The American democratic experience is built upon the foundation of concerned and caring residents becoming actively involved in local government. Consistent with this principle, Garland’s Charter provides for the City Council to utilize resident volunteers to assist in carrying out the many functions of municipal government by serving on various advisory boards and commissions. Volunteer Garland is building a Chainsaw Response Team, a group of skilled and safety conscious volunteers who can assist residents with fallen trees or large limbs following storms or unexpected situations.

Many of these requests come from older adults, individuals with limited physical capacity, or households facing financial challenges. These are neighbors who may not have the resources or ability to address the issue on their own. Your support can make an immediate and meaningful difference.

Most projects are short term and are typically completed within a week. Requests are coordinated based on urgency and volunteer availability.

In most cases, a separate volunteer group will assist with debris cleanup and hauling, typically the following Saturday. Chainsaw team members are welcome, but not required, to participate in these follow up efforts.

This initiative has the potential to grow into a broader community resource. Future opportunities may include hosting hands on trainings for residents, supporting storm preparedness efforts, and developing a community based volunteer disaster response team.

We are looking for volunteers to help Garland residents with basic lawn mowing and light yard care. This effort supports residents who may be unable to maintain their yards due to age, disability, or temporary hardship.

Volunteers will provide simple lawn care services that help residents stay safe, maintain their homes, and remain in compliance with City codes while showing kindness where it matters most.

This project is conducted in partnership with Garland Code Compliance.

Volunteers will help residents by providing light lawn care. This may include mowing lawns, light trimming or edging, bagging or stacking grass clippings, and basic yard cleanup. This project does not include heavy landscaping or construction work.

Volunteers must provide their own lawn mower, trimmer, basic yard tools, work gloves, and eye protection. Volunteers are also responsible for their own transportation to and from the service location. Volunteers may not enter the homes or do remodeling work through the program for safety reasons. 

Please note that the City of Garland does not provide lawn equipment for this project.

The City of Garland will provide project coordination and resident matching, instructions and expectations before each assignment.

Join us for a special community celebration honoring the designation of a Texas Historical Marker for “The Flats,” a historic Black residential, commercial, and educational community that once thrived in downtown Garland during the early 20th century.

This free, public event will feature a live re-enactment of a scene from the musical drama “The Flats: Cradle of a Community,” performed by the original cast, followed by the official marker presentation and dedication.

Who speaks for you when you cannot? Do you have a list of your medications, medical history and allergies readily available? In an emergency, this is important information which the first responders need to know. The Garland Fire Department has created such a list for you Emergency Medical Information Form (PDF). Please print it, complete it, place it in a baggie and tape it to your refrigerator door. If you are on the go a lot, place a second one in your purse. This information could help save your life.

The Citizens Fire Academy is open to anyone over the age of eighteen who lives or works in the City of Garland. This program is intended to familiarize citizens and associates of the services we provide, how we operate, and why we do things we do. Class hours are from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday nights. We are proud to announce an opportunity for graduating senior GISD students to attend a Youth Citizens Fire Academy which is intended to promote a greater understanding of the mission, responsibilities, and activities of the Fire Department while serving the community. Volunteer Garland invites you to help brighten the lives of children and teens in foster care (ages 3–18). Many of these youth are navigating difficult transitions — your support can bring comfort, dignity, and hope right when they need it most.

UPDATE: 01/05/26

Care Backpacks have been suspended. Residents in December overwhelmed the agency's storage capacity. (Good job, Garland) They are looking for a company that is interested in redirecting their giving to help them with a storage unit. Volunteer Garland will update this listing when the current stock of backpacks is given out to the new intakes, so as to not overwhelm their staff.

The additional cost of taking in babies for these items keeps potential foster care homes from taking in babies. The agency is asking for these items to help retain and recruit new foster homes. 

Spread holiday cheer by donating new, unwrapped toys for children and teens. Every gift helps ensure they have something to call their own this season.

The nature of our work requires weekend and evening work, which means we have to balance our weekday office presence. 

The holidays are a special time to give, but this program continues year-round. Each donation helps children and teens entering foster care feel safe, valued, and cared for — not just during the holidays, but every season of the year.

We know some students and community members are looking to complete volunteer hours. Donations count! If you bring items for this program, you can still acquire volunteer hours for your contribution.

Every donation — large or small — has the power to restore hope, dignity, and comfort to a child in foster care. Whether it’s a single toy, a pack of wipes, or a full backpack, your gift matters more than you know.

ATTENTION: Starting on Monday, March 23, volunteering on the Reader Stairs will be limited to 3 hours per day. The rules written below are still in effect. 

Central Library is looking for teen volunteers to model proper usage of our new Reader Stairs. To discourage people (especially children) from climbing or jumping on the Reader Stairs, volunteers can find a seat on the stairs while reading a book, working on school assignments, or other quiet activities of your choosing. Snacks and covered drinks are allowed, but meals must be eaten in the upstairs lobby. Here's how it works:

Volunteers are welcome to sign up in groups to sit together on the stairs, as long as they keep their volume at a reasonable level. Music or audio from phones must be played on headphones/earbuds.

This volunteer opportunity is for ages 12-18 only during Central Library's operating hours. Volunteers will sign in for their shift downstairs at the Children's Desk. UPDATE: Volunteers must sign out at least 30 minutes before closing.

Come help us at Play & Learn, where families with children ages 0 to 5 join us in the Central Library Storytime Room to enjoy an assortment of toys, games, and activities that foster imagination, creativity and problem solving.

Volunteers will sign in at 10 am and help count attendance during the program, which runs 10 a.m. to noon. At noon, we will close the storytime room, and volunteers will help clean the toys and put them away.

Volunteering with Garland Youth Council

Good Samaritans of Garland (“Good Sam”) is a nonprofit food pantry serving neighbors in Garland and the surrounding community who are experiencing hunger or food insecurity. Volunteers help make sure families have access to nutritious food in a welcoming, dignified environment.

This is an external partner opportunity. Volunteer Garland will connect you to Good Sam’s volunteer interest form so you can sign up directly with their team.

Good Sam has several weekday volunteer roles at their food pantry:

Welcome Room

Greet guests and check them in.

Assist with basic registration steps.

Help guests take food to their vehicle with a cart when needed.

Bilingual Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially helpful for translation.

Kitchen Support

Help prepare carts with food items for guests.

Stock shelves with donations received from retail partners each day.

Pantry Support

Assemble dry-goods boxes and produce bags.

Unload deliveries and restock shelves, refrigerators, and freezers.

Assist with end-of-day clean up.

If you have other skills (office, logistics, language, etc.), you can share them with Good Sam’s team when you complete their interest form.

Volunteering with Garland Police Department

The Garland Police Department’s Citizens On Patrol (C.O.P.) program is an extension of the Neighborhood Crime Watch program and provides an opportunity for citizens to take an active role in crime prevention in their neighborhood. C.O.P. members must complete a training class provided by the police department and are instructed in effective ways to patrol their neighborhood in a car, on foot, or on a bicycle. The objective of the program is to provide more eyes and ears on the streets of Garland observing and reporting crime and/or suspicious activity.

Volunteering with the Garland Police Department

The Garland Citizen Police Academy (CPA) offers residents and those who work in Garland a unique opportunity to learn about the Garland Police Department. Over several weeks, participants hear from officers, detectives, investigators, and specialists, gaining insight into various aspects of law enforcement.

The program features interactive sessions, detention center and communications observations, a ride-along, and hands-on demonstrations, providing a deeper understanding of the department’s role in the community. By strengthening relationships, the CPA fosters transparency, trust, and engagement.

Volunteering with the Garland Police Department

The volunteers of the Garland Police Department continue to assist us in our service to the citizens of this city by contributing their time, expertise, and commitment to our department. Their willingness to help and their professionalism have truly been an example to all other volunteer groups. We are, once again, grateful for their assistance. All those interested in volunteering must first attend and complete the Garland Citizen's Police Academy.

Volunteers offer fingerprinting services Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., off the main lobby of the Police Department. Cash only.

Uniformed volunteers in a marked Garland Police car check the homes of Garland citizens who are away from home on vacation to ensure that no burglar has broken in and taken their possessions. If you would like to have your home placed on the Vacation Watch list, please view the Vacation Watch Request Form (PDF) This service is available to any homeowner within the city limits of Garland.

Volunteers are utilized by the Patrol Division to maintain the safe condition of the Patrol vehicles by checking fluid levels, making sure that lights, brakes, etc. are functioning properly, and transporting the vehicles needing repairs to and from the City garage.

Makerspace Volunteers work alongside library staff to support patrons using innovative equipment and creative tools in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

This is a hands-on role ideal for adults who want to share their expertise while supporting community access to technology and creative expression.

Provide basic instruction, demonstrations, and troubleshooting within your area of expertise

Teens ages 12-18 can earn community service hours by volunteering at the library's STEAM Lab.  This month children ages 6-12 will learn create colorful flowers that light-up with a simple custom circuit.

Self Directed Litter Cleanup Program

The City of Garland's Volunteer Office holds guided litter cleanups once a month. The registration for those opportunities will be listed separately on the Get Connected website.

North Texas Community Cleanup Challenge - March 1st - May 31st

Join us in making a difference across our region by participating in the North Texas Community Cleanup! Volunteers of all ages are invited to help remove litter, beautify our neighborhoods, and protect our local parks, creeks, and roadways. Whether you come as an individual, family, or group, your time and effort will help create a cleaner, healthier community for everyone.

Location: Garland Senior Activity Center
Commitment: Once per month (2–3 hours per session)

Do you enjoy helping others feel confident using technology?

Volunteer Garland is seeking patient, friendly individuals to serve as Senior Digital Literacy Volunteers at the Garland Senior Activity Center.

Volunteers will visit the center once per month to provide basic technology guidance to older adults in a supportive group setting. Sessions may include short lessons followed by one-on-one assistance.

Topics may include:

Understanding WiFi and internet basics

What is a QR code and how to use it

Smartphone settings and features

Sending photos and text messages

Video calling (FaceTime / Zoom)

Avoiding online scams and phishing

Downloading and using apps

Volunteers do not repair devices or access financial accounts. Seniors will enter their own passwords and maintain control of their personal information at all times.

Qualifications:

Age 18 or older

Successful completion of City background check

Basic comfort with smartphones and tablets

Strong communication skills and patience

Ability to explain technology in simple, clear language

Training and session guidelines will be provided.

Let’s drop into Earth Day by doing a little good for the planet and some paws in need.

Join us from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM for our 4th Annual Earth Day Cleanup. Volunteers are welcome and encouraged to bring donations for the Garland Animal Shelter. Every donation gets you entered into a raffle to win prizes.

During the cleanup, 4DWNBABES will be joining us for a community skate session, so it is part litter cleanup, part skate sesh.

Want to earn extra volunteer credits? Bring a donation and help the shelter fetch some much-needed supplies. Spring also means kitten season, and the shelter could really use kitten formula for their tiniest residents. Check the links below for other items the shelter currently needs.

After the cleanup, we will roll over to Rick Oden Baseball Field for a free community softball game from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Refreshments will be available during the game. They are not for sale, but donations are welcome. Every dollar goes straight to the Garland Animal Shelter, so you can snack for a good cause. Donations will continue throughout the game.

So come skate by, pitch in, and help us knock it out of the park for Garland’s shelter animals.

Spring Creek Park Preserve & the FIFA World Cup Organizing Committee

iNaturalist is a free phone and web app enables you to catalog your own observations in nature. But it is also a powerful international citizen-science tool that enables scientists to track information on thousands of species worldwide – information such as enabling predictions about species decline or health, indicating whether the species habitat is expanding or collapsing, and much, much more.

Every observation can contribute to biodiversity science, from the rarest butterfly to the most common backyard weed. Findings are shared with scientific data repositories like the Global Biodiversity Information Facility to help scientists find and use your data. All you have to do is observe and share your discoveries!

Experienced iNaturalist volunteers from the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest (springcreekforest.org) and Trinity River Audubon Center will be on hand to get new naturalists started and to point out the best “hot spots” in the preserve to make observations.

The Garland Public Library is seeking dependable adult volunteers to support our after-school program for tweens and teens. This program provides a safe, welcoming place where youth can complete homework, participate in activities, and connect with positive adult role models.

If you enjoy working with middle and high school students and can provide calm, consistent support, we’d love to hear from you.

Support and supervise youth alongside library staff

Assist with games, crafts, and activities

Offer light homework encouragement (not formal tutoring)

Model respectful behavior and positive communication

Help with setup, cleanup, and snack distribution
