Volunteering with Garland Police Department

The Garland Police Department’s Citizens On Patrol (C.O.P.) program is an extension of the Neighborhood Crime Watch program and provides an opportunity for citizens to take an active role in crime prevention in their neighborhood. C.O.P. members must complete a training class provided by the police department and are instructed in effective ways to patrol their neighborhood in a car, on foot, or on a bicycle. The objective of the program is to provide more eyes and ears on the streets of Garland observing and reporting crime and/or suspicious activity.

Consistent with this principle, Garland’s Charter provides for the City Council to utilize resident volunteers to assist in carrying out the many functions of municipal government by serving on various advisory boards and commissions. Good Samaritans of Garland (“Good Sam”) is a nonprofit food pantry serving neighbors in Garland and the surrounding community who are experiencing hunger or food insecurity. Volunteers help make sure families have access to nutritious food in a welcoming, dignified environment.

This is an external partner opportunity. Volunteer Garland will connect you to Good Sam’s volunteer interest form so you can sign up directly with their team.

Good Sam has several weekday volunteer roles at their food pantry:

Welcome Room

Greet guests and check them in.

Assist with basic registration steps.

Help guests take food to their vehicle with a cart when needed.

Bilingual Spanish-speaking volunteers are especially helpful for translation.

Kitchen Support

Help prepare carts with food items for guests.

Stock shelves with donations received from retail partners each day.

Pantry Support

Assemble dry-goods boxes and produce bags.

Unload deliveries and restock shelves, refrigerators, and freezers.

Assist with end-of-day clean up.

If you have other skills (office, logistics, language, etc.), you can share them with Good Sam’s team when you complete their interest form.

Volunteer Garland is seeking community members interested in assisting City of Garland departments with temporary office support projects during regular business hours. These opportunities may include filing, organizing documents, data entry, assembling packets, assisting staff with administrative projects, event preparation, phone support, or other general office tasks.

The Volunteer Garland Community Response Team is a growing network of residents who want to help Garland during times of community need, neighborhood recovery, special projects, and preparedness efforts. The group is a new partnership between the City of Garland's Office of Emergency Management and Volunteer Garland. 

Volunteers may assist with storm recovery support, neighborhood cleanup projects, supply distribution, community outreach, event support, damage reporting assistance, logistics support, and other citywide volunteer efforts as needs arise.

This interest list helps Volunteer Garland identify residents interested in future opportunities connected to community resiliency, preparedness, and recovery efforts. Volunteers will receive notifications about trainings, projects, and opportunities that match their interests and availability.

The listings will be called "Volunteer University - Emergency Preparedness Training." We plan to offer 2 courses this summer, 1 in the fall, and 2 in the spring. 

No previous experience is required for most opportunities. Some specialized projects or response roles may require additional training, background checks, waivers, or certifications.

About the Opportunity:
Volunteer Garland is working to help support future public safety and emergency response training exercises by building a trusted pool of volunteer scenario actors.

These volunteers may assist Garland public safety personnel during realistic training scenarios designed to help first responders prepare for emergency situations in controlled training environments.

Scenario actors help create realism, movement, decision-making pressure, and environmental complexity that improves the quality of training for law enforcement and emergency personnel.

This opportunity is intended for mature, dependable volunteers who understand the importance of professionalism, discretion, and following directions in structured training environments.

Potential Training Scenarios May Include:

Active shooter response exercises

Building evacuation simulations

Emergency response drills

Crowd movement and bystander scenarios

Vehicle stop/takedown simulations

Victim/witness role-playing

Disaster and emergency management exercises

Volunteer Roles May Include:

Civilians/bystanders

Witnesses

Evacuees

Injured victims

Panicked civilians

Optional suspect/aggressor roles during select training exercises

No acting experience is required. Public safety personnel and Volunteer Garland staff will provide instructions prior to all scenarios.

Important Expectations:

Volunteers must be able to follow directions quickly and professionally.

Volunteers must maintain discretion regarding training activities, tactics, personnel, and locations.

Photography, video recording, livestreaming, or sharing sensitive training details may be prohibited during exercises.

Scenario volunteers are present to support training realism and public safety preparedness.

Some scenarios may involve loud noises, emergency vehicles, tactical equipment, simulated injuries, stress-based environments, and physical movement.

Volunteers should be comfortable walking, standing for extended periods, using stairs, and occasionally getting up/down from the ground during simulations.

All volunteers must wear Volunteer Garland safety vests during check-in, staging, and non-active training periods unless otherwise instructed by staff.

Optional Marking Round Participation:
Some advanced training scenarios may involve volunteers serving as simulated aggressors during controlled exercises using non-lethal marking/training rounds.

Important:

Participation in these roles is completely voluntary.

Marking rounds can cause pain, bruising, welts, and damage to clothing.

Clothing may become permanently stained or damaged.

Volunteers participating in these scenarios must wear heavy, layered clothing.

Protective equipment may be required and/or provided depending on the exercise.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring additional protective sports gear if desired, including:

Paintball padding

Compression layers

Padded shirts

Protective gloves

Athletic cups/protection

Mouthguards

Other non-metal protective sports equipment

Volunteer Garland and participating public safety agencies are not responsible for damaged clothing or discomfort resulting from voluntary participation in approved training exercises.

Background Screening & Selection:

Volunteers must be willing to undergo background screening if requested.

Participation is not guaranteed.

Some exercises may require additional approval, screening, waivers, or age restrictions depending on the nature of the training.

Scheduling:

The City of Garland Environmental Health Department is seeking volunteers to assist with a special records digitization project. Volunteers will help scan paper files into the City's electronic records system, making information easier to access and preserve for future use.

Do you enjoy robotics, engineering, coding, or building things? Volunteer Garland is seeking a passionate volunteer to launch a robotics program for older adults at one of the City of Garland Senior Centers.

This is an exciting opportunity to introduce senior adults to the world of robotics through fun, hands-on learning. Whether your experience comes from education, engineering, FIRST Robotics, VEX, LEGO Robotics, or another robotics platform, your knowledge can inspire a new generation of makers.

Working alongside Senior Center staff, you will help design and teach a robotics program that fits the interests and abilities of participants. As the program grows, volunteers will also help organize a friendly robotics showcase or competition where participants can demonstrate the robots they have designed and built.

Volunteer Garland is working with Agape Manor Home, a local foster care agency, to help support a foster family in need of a few household items for a child in their care.

We are currently looking for donations of the following:

Twin-size headboard

Bed legs or a compatible frame/support for a twin bed

The family currently has a twin mattress and metal box spring but does not have the remaining pieces needed to properly set up the bed.

Items may be gently used but should be clean, safe, functional, and in good condition. Please do not drop off items without first contacting Volunteer Garland so we can confirm the item is still needed and coordinate the donation.

Foster families frequently take children into their homes with very little notice and may suddenly need furniture, baby supplies, clothing, and other essentials. Small donations like these can help a family provide a comfortable and welcoming home without taking on another unexpected expense.

This request is being coordinated through Volunteer Garland on behalf of Agape Manor Home and a local foster family. To protect the family's privacy, personal information about the foster family and child will not be provided.
